Saturn, our sixth planet, is almost twice as far from the Sun as Jupiter. Orbiting almost 900 million miles out from the Sun, Saturn is second in size to Jupiter but it's mass is much smaller. Saturn's total mass is equal to 95 times that of Earth. It's diameter is about 71,000 miles at it's equator. Saturn's rotational speed completes it's day in a little more than 10 1/2 hours. However, it takes Saturn almost 29 1/2 of our Earth years to complete it's journey around the Sun. Saturn travels in it's orbit around the Sun at about 1/3 the speed of Planet Earth. Saturn's atmosphere is much like that of Jupiter, except the temperatures are much lower. The theoretical composition of Saturn is that it resembles Jupiter in the respect that it has a small dense core at it's center surrounded by a layer of liquid hydrogen 96%, and helium 3%, with trace gases of methane and ammonia covering the planet in a dense layer of gas. Saturn has 30 satellites, some sharing the same orbits. The data interpretations have been confused by debris located within Saturn's Rings.

Saturn's Ring System begins about 7,000 miles above the visible boundaries of the planet, and just above Saturn's equator. The rings extend some 35,000 miles into space. The diameter of the Ring System is about 170,000 miles.
The Ring field is estimated to be about 10 miles thick. In 1973 radar imaging showed the Ring particles to be large chunks of material averaging a meter in size.
