Saturn - Voyager 2
False color close-up image of Saturn's atmosphere from 7.1 million km
Voyager 2 close-up of Saturn's cloud tops in false color. The image was made by combining green and violet filter
images taken on 19 August 1981, one week before closest approach. The smallest visible features in this image are about
130 km across. The blue oval at the center of the image would be brown in true color. The features directly south of the
oval are moving about 70 km/hr west relative to the oval, while the wave like structures to the north are moving east at
540 km/hr. The frame is about 52,000 km from top to bottom. North is at 11:00.
